The
first thing to realize about pest control is that insects and rodents vast-
ly
outnumber us and a vigorous and concerted effort is necessary in order
to
keep
our homes and businesses free of roaches, ants, mice and other pests.
Roaches
can be brought into homes and businesses in paper goods, produce
items
( tomatoes, potatoes, etc. ) or can crawl into structures under poorly
sealed
threshholds, and can get in whenever doors and windows are left open
for
ventilation or while trash is being taken out.
Mice
and Rats enter whenever there is an opening into buildings. These
open-
ings
may be around plumbing, spaces under doors, or drain pipes that lead up
into
structures.
Various
other pests enter by crawling through window openings or by flying
in
through open doors or windows.
Steps
that need to be taken to help keep your residence or business as free
of
pests as possible include:
.Make a visual
inspection of the exterior of your home or business.
.Caulk all
openings around windows and other areas that have possible entry points
.
.Use amber
lighting outside. This keeps insects from being attracted to bright
lighting.
.Replace
worn threshholds.
.Place 1/4
inch mesh wire over all drains leading into your structure.
.Check groceries
that are brought into the home. These are favorite hiding places
for roaches and other
insects.
.Keep bait
stations out to take care of insects that may be brought into your home.
.Set out
glue traps ( in out of the way places) to serve as early warning signals
of
insect or rodent activity.
.Keep your
residence or business as clean as possible. Roaches and other insects
can live on extremely
small amounts of food items, such as crumbs.
.Fix water
leaks as soon as possible. Roaches can do without food for several
days
but must have access to
moisture on a regular basis in order to live.
.Spray the
exterior perimeter of your structure ( s ) with a long lasting insecticide.
This will eliminate many
of the insects before they have a chance to enter your
home.
.Caulk all
cracks around baseboards and cabinets. Roaches love to wedge themselves
into tight openings.
Take away those hiding places from them.
.Clear away
all piles of debris in your yard and around your home or your business.
Those piles of limbs,
leaves, tires, etc. make an excellent hiding place for a variety
of insects and rodents.
.Keep the
grass mowed on a regular basis.
Use these tips and your good common
sense and you will see a noticeable improvement
in the amount of pests you will
have to deal with.
